The Medieval
Garden
Simple, useful and created on limited space
In Medieval times,gardens were
cultivated almost exclusively in monasteries and castles. They were used to grow
herbs, but also a place for social gatherings of court society trying to escape
the small confined and uncomfortable rooms of the castles during the summer
season. Some crusaders had aquired a certain level of cosmopolitan education.
They had brought back the knowledge to develop a more decent courtly lifestyle,
which was reflected in the role of the gardens as areas of joy and amusements.
In these pleasances, people took a refreshing bath in the fountain, played
games, enjoyed their meals, or simply enjoyed life. The basic elements of the
gardens were fairly modest, and the beds were framed by pieces of
wood.
