In the 17th
and 18th century, approximately a fifth of the provinces of Styria belonged to
the counts of Herberstein. They owned more than a dozen fortresses and castles
from Istria to Bohemia, from Carinthia to Silesia. Among them were the
castles of Auffen, Liebenau, Neuberg near Hartberg, Stubenberg as well as two
palaces in Graz, and many more.
With the marriage between the Imperial Count Leopold von Herberstein and
Princess Eleonore von Eggenberg, Eggenberg Castle also came into the possession
of the family. In this days as governor of Styria, Leopold was also responsible
for the building of the Graz Playhouse ("Schauspielhaus"). In 1938, Eggenberg
Castle was purchased by the province of Styria. |
